Idris Bergström is a Swedish-Dutch narrative nonfiction writer and documentary producer based between Malmö and Rotterdam. Trained as a civil engineer at Chalmers University of Technology, he shifted to journalism after reporting on North Sea dredging tenders for a trade journal, eventually contributing long-form pieces to De Correspondent and Dagens Nyheter. His work often braids infrastructure, memory, and maritime culture, informed by years spent embedded with pilots, riggers, and municipal planners along the Baltic and the Maas.
Bergström is the author of the essay collections Harbor of Echoes and Icebound Ferries, and the reportage volume Salt Roads of the Baltic, which was shortlisted for the European Press Prize and named a finalist for the Svenska Förläggareföreningen Nonfiction Award. A former Fulbright visiting researcher at TU Delft, he lectures on narrative engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. He writes in Swedish, Dutch, and English, and divides his time between a converted customs warehouse on the Nieuwe Maas and a small cottage on Österlen, where he restores a wooden pilot cutter.
